About CoinBase

In 2012, Coinbase kicked off an idea, to enable anyone from anywhere to be able to use Bitcoin in a simple and secure way. With a vision of seeing crytocurrency as the legal tender or money of the future and a means to endless possibilities in the financial sector. I am in love with the design team, from the branding to the user interface and the service they are offering, I couldn't help but introduce the redesign of this logo animation by Finn. The aims of this is not to play down on the awesome work and research done by the Coinbase team but for education purpose as learning is a virtue I am passionate about, which is why I chose to redesign a few experience on this awesome Coinbase App

Why

Interaction design is a conversation between a human and a digital device, and it has been proven that we humans relate to our gadgets with the same parts of our brain we use with other humans, especially during irritation. Hence, why people exhibit some body languages or attitudes or responsd in like manner such as; using abusive terms, or banging of devices or work desk when they tend to malfunction or not meet our expectations.🚀 I could spot out some minor UX problems and also to add a feature that would change the game and put coinbase at the forefront. Coinbase has a minimal visual presence and they have done a pretty amazing job in the adoption of cryptocurrency you can see the stats below.

How

The steps are pretty straight forward and follow this order;

  1. Run a bit of anaylis on the brand and the opportunities
  2. Review screenshots of the coinbase application,
  3. then identify the components for the screens that require a bit of adjustment
  4. next is to create the style guide of this component and recreate them.
  5. Lastly, put the screens together and create an interaction

Analysis

I conducted a research across some competitors and extracted the design strengths and weakness, that enhanced user's experiences and also the opportunities to explore.

Educate Users

Educating users is paramount to aiding their decision making. I have a mantra in design "Action is done, when there is less to think about". I adopted this way to educate users by placing info-icon-buttons and popping a modal to help explain certain crypto lingua and web3 terminologies that may cause uncertainty to the users. I decided to use this screen below to visualise this experience.

Purchase

A trend within this app when fetching the list of currencies, that enables a users to perform a DEX or transaction, lacks the option on this screen to search for a specific cryto or to filter in accordance to the user's experience. Ruling out a search and filter feature would cause a few UX issues which may arise such as

  • A returning user may have certains Tokens which they regularly purchase
  • A user wants to purchase what is trending in the market
  • Search for a specific cryptocurrency, I have been influenced or studied about
  • Check if a certain crypto is listed on Coinbase to build trust or enable purchase
  • cryptocurrencies frequently bought or favrites which the user intends to buy again
  • As we all know the demand and supply is a major factor to what rules the DEFI system, and it is only better, if users can sort the Tokens in accordance. This is a visual experience of what this would feel like;

    Asset & Recuring Setup

    Coinbase did a pretty amazing job with the flow, here by considering the concept of recurrent purchase in the absence of the user with a smart contract and also to display the tokens within the user's portfolio. A simple search feature, to be able to search for a particular Token would have helped users in order to avoid a long list of scrolls. In the interaction below, when users tend to purchase, the option to have a recurring setup for purchase would be awesome as well as have the user be empowered to setup a custom date in which they prefer this transactions to occur

    Crypto Suggestion Feature

    In a user study conducted by Kushagra, it was discovered that users that have enough capital to invest, do not have enough time to research about crypto currencies, when to buy and also sell them. Let your imagination flow, imagine if there existed a suggestion feature, where experienced traders can communicate their choices which can fall mostly between each one's network such as family and friends to build trust, would aid curious investors. This would defeat exiting the app to go to external social platforms like Facebook, whatsApp, which are not designed for such operation. Have a look at this featue;

    Learnings & Collaboration

    I am dabbing into the web3 and XR space, working on this review helped me see how DEX, Wallets, DEFI, DAOs all come to play to run on a blockchain network. The review helped me take a minimal approach to the style guide and see the mind behind the Coinbase team in solving such a new and complex problem and also opened my mind into the opportunies in the web3 space, such as the suggestion feature. I want to also appreciate these guys for their tremendous access given to me to their studies; Martin - Animator,Kushagra - UX Research
